Grades used

Imperial Steel

Grade 2 - Low or medium carbon steel -Standard steel grade for hardware; may have a manufacturer’s mark ot unmarked

Grade 5 - Medium carbon steel, quenched and tempered - also known as grade F, and is used in automotive applications.  Bolts made from grade 5 steel feature 3 radial line heads.

Grade 8 - Medium carbon alloy steel, quenched and tempered- Bolts are harder than grade 5 and are used in demanding applications such as automotive suspensions and high stress environments. feature 6 radial line heads.

Alloy Steel - Grade A325 Carbon or Alloy Steel with or without Boron -  Heat treated for extra strength, distinguished by their gray black finish.

Metric Steel

Class 8.8 - Medium carbon steel, quenched and tempered Sizes <16mm Proof Load MPa 580 - Yield Strength MPa 640 - Tensile Strength 800

Class 8.8 - Medium carbon steel, quenched and tempered Sizes >16mm to 72mm Proof Load MPa 600- Yield Strength MPa 660 - Tensile Strength 830

Class 10.9 Alloy steel, quenched and tempered Sizes 5mm - 100mm Proof Load MPa 830- Yield Strength MPa 940 - Tensile Strength 1040

Class 12.9 Alloy steel, quenched and tempered Sizes 1.6mm - 100mm Proof Load MPa 970- Yield Strength MPa 1100 - Tensile Strength 1220

Stainless markings vary. Most stainless is non-magnetic. Usually stamped A2-70. A4-70, A4-80

A2-70 - Tensile Strength min 700 -  Yield Strength 0.2% Proof (MPa) min 450
A4-70 - Tensile Strength min 700 -  Yield Strength 0.2% Proof (MPa) min 450

A4-80 - Tensile Strength min 800 -  Yield Strength 0.2% Proof (MPa) min 600

High Grade Stainless 17-4 PH is a precipitation hardening martensitic stainless

17-4 H1150 - Tensile Strength min 135,000 -  Yield Strength 0.2% Proof (PSI) min 105,000
